She remained an expert betting predictions active lecturer, travelling extensively to promote conservation and climate action. By attributing human traits to animals that are not human, I committed what is considered the gravest sin in ethology—anthropomorphism. At that time, numbering was widely adopted and was believed to be crucial for maintaining objectivity by preventing emotional connections with the subjects of study. In her primate research, Goodall distinguished herself from traditional approaches by naming the animals rather than merely assigning them numbers. This marked a significant scientific breakthrough that contested earlier beliefs about the diet and behavior of chimpanzees.

Her first book-length study (In the Shadow of Man (1971)), was later translated into 48 languages. Goodall lives in Terre Haute (Indiana), where he has worked as a school janitor with the Vigo County School Corporation for 23 years. Hopefully (from now on), Richard’s victory will inspire many people to pursue their dreams. As he told People, he plans to invest part of his $1 million prize, buy a house and ‘give back to people’. For a start (Richard isn’t leaving his janitor job for the time being), but is planning to see what other opportunities are there for him and his wife Angie. In the Finals, Richard performed Journey’s “Faithfully”, and advanced to the Finale, where he performed “Don’t Stop Believing” once again, though this time alongside Journey.

Where was Jane Goodall born?

Despite his visible nervousness when he spoke to the judges for the first time, it just took him a couple of seconds to impress everyone with his “Don’t Stop Believing” rendition. As Richard admitted to People, he thought that his journey was meant to last just one song, before he would take a plane back home. He’s also a member of the band ManOpause (which performs renditions of rock classics), and has almost 2,000 followers on Facebook. Before setting foot on the stage of “America’s Got Talent”, Richard worked as a janitor at Chauncey Rose Middle School, located in the same school district he’s been working in for 23 years. While Richard’s life has undoubtedly changed thanks to “America’s Got Talent”, those changes started even before he entered the competition.

That’s the case for season 19’s winner Richard Goodall (a 55-year-old school janitor), who demonstrated not only that America loves the underdog, but also that it’s never too late to pursue our dreams, especially if you have a talent like his. She attended Newnham College — Cambridge, to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree in ethology. Louis Leakey arranged funding — and in 1962 he sent Goodall, who had no degree, to the University of Cambridge. Goodall credits her mother with encouraging her to pursue a career in primatology, a male-dominated field at the time.

Goodall wrote a number of books and articles about various aspects of her work — notably In the Shadow of Man (1971). After her divorce she married Derek Bryceson — who was then member of Tanzania’s parliament and director of the Tanzanian national park system. Mattel stated that the doll was created to honor Goodall’s “years of commitment, pioneering research, and notable achievements as an activist, expert in animal behavior, and conservationist. In 2022, Mattel introduced a Goodall doll themed around Barbie, made from recycled plastic and dressed for fieldwork, equipped with a notebook and binoculars. The song “Jane,” composed by Stevie Nicks in 1990, pays tribute to the life and contributions of Goodall. She wed Derek Bryceson, a former Tanzanian parliament member and director of the national parks in that country, the following year. Following the publication, Goodall attributed the plagiarism claims to her “disorganized note-taking” and subsequently revised the book in light of the accusations. After undergoing review and incorporating 57 pages of endnotes (the book was officially released on April 1), 2014.

During the first ten years of the study I had believed … that the Gombe chimpanzees were (for the most part), rather nicer than human beings. She found that “it isn’t only human beings who have personality, who are capable of rational thought and emotions like joy and sorrow.” She also observed behaviours often considered human, such as hugs, kisses, pats on the back, and even tickling. She was the eighth person to be allowed to study for a PhD at Cambridge without first having obtained a bachelor’s degree. In 1958 Leakey sent Goodall to London to study primate behaviour with Osman Hill and primate anatomy with John Napier. Leakey — believing that the study of existing great apes could provide indications of the behaviour of early hominids, was looking for a chimpanzee researcher, though he kept the idea to himself. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to promote wildlife conservation, followed by the Roots & Shoots youth programme in 1991, which grew into a global network.

To ensure the safe and ethical treatment of animals during ethological studies, Goodall, alongside Professor Mark Bekoff, founded the organisation Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in 2000. As of 2004 Goodall devoted virtually all of her time to advocacy on behalf of chimpanzees and the environment, travelling nearly 300 days a year. Research at Gombe Stream National Park

After the family moved to Bournemouth, Goodall attended Uplands School, an independent school in nearby Poole. Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall was born in April 1934 in Hampstead, London, to Mortimer Herbert Morris-Goodall, a businessman, and Margaret Myfanwe Joseph, a novelist from Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, who wrote under the pen name Vanne Morris-Goodall. Goodall served on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project from 2022 until her death. Among other honours, she was a recipient of the National Geographic Society’s Hubbard Medal, the Kyoto Prize, the Templeton Prize and the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On top of that, his social media follower count hasn’t stopped growing, with his Facebook and Instagram accounts gaining almost 200,000 combined in just a couple of months. The school where he has been working for over two decades now has his victory song “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey as the school year’s hymn. He’s performed in several events in his local Indiana (where he was warmly welcomed by people in his hometown Terre Haute), with the mayor presenting him with the keys to the city. His perfect and moving audition left audiences open-mouthed and enthralled, setting the path to a memorable journey which resulted in Richard hitting the season’s winning spot.

Among her accolades are the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the French Legion of Honour, the Order of the Torch of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the esteemed Kyoto Prize from Japan, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science, the Gandhi-King Award for Nonviolence, and the Spanish Prince of Asturias Awards. In the New Year Honours of 1995 (she was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) “for services to zoology,” and in the 2003 Birthday Honours), she was elevated to Dame Commander of the same Order (DBE) “for contributions to the environment and conservation.

Goodall maintained that these actions illustrate “the strong — nurturing, and affectionate connections that can develop among family members and others within a community, enduring for over 50 years. Starting in 1960, Goodall explored the social and familial dynamics of chimpanzees, initiating her work with the Kasakela community in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania. An honorary Doctor of Science degree was awarded to her by the Open University of Tanzania on June 19, 2006. In 1966, her thesis was finalized under Robert Hinde’s guidance, focusing on the behavior of wild chimpanzees and documenting her initial five years of research at the Gombe Reserve.
